Joe Way | Executive Director, Digital Spaces | University of California, Los Angeles

After a comprehensive assessment of the technology and cyber security posture at UCLA that included conducting more than 140 interviews, as well as focus groups and listening sessions with every college and unit, to evaluate our current IT environment, UCLA embarked on its revolutionary enterprise upgrade plan that aligns with the university’s new 5-Year Strategic Plan and playing host as Olympic Village for the 2028 Olympic Games. The findings from this study were the impetus for the creation of the Digital Campus Roadmap. The Digital Campus Roadmap provides the pathway—aligned with the strategic goals of the university—that enables an IT support model of excellence and enhances the teaching, learning, and research experience at UCLA. UCLA’s exceptional endeavors deserve comprehensive, forward-thinking technology solutions. To meet the needs of today’s campus and tomorrow’s leaders, we have identified a set of strategic priorities. Guided by these objectives, stakeholders throughout UCLA IT will collaboratively design and implement strategies that reinforce the university’s current standard of excellence while taking a proactive approach to future campus priorities. In this session, Dr. Joe Way will share their roadmap for success and how his Digital Spaces team is leveraging itself for success through emerging technologies, innovating customer service strategies, and corporate partnership in AI and enterprise AV/IT architecture.

Mark Dunlop | Head of Media Services | University of Aberdeen

Having spent 20 years at my previous employer I decided to take up a new challenge at the University of Aberdeen. When I got here it did not take me long to work out there were going to be significant challenges in managing an estate that was poorly documented and maintained.
This will highlight some of my findings and the journey we are now on to turn things around.
Beginning at the Old Gym the LRAT team (Shiji, Adam and James) will take 3 teams to visit the historical Domes lecture theatre in Aston Webb, a meeting room in A Block, a tour of the BIM Cave and train simulator in the New School of Engineering and University of Birmingham's largest lecture theatre in the Teaching and Learning Building.

Karen Ethier | Senior Director of Support Services | Roger Williams University | incoming President of ETC

The aftermath of the pandemic, along with shifting demographics, have led to a sharp downturn in undergraduate enrollment numbers across the US. This has led to school closings, reorganizations, layoffs, and a need to rethink the future of the academy itself. Audio visual and IT departments find themselves needing to provide support with less funding, less people, and with a new urgency to assist in student retention.
This presentation will discuss not only the impact of the US higher education “demographic cliff”, but will highlight trends in technology models and support in US institutions.
Additionally, highlights and updates from ETC will be included.
Karen Ethier has 25 years of experience in IT and/or Audio Visual. She currently serves as the Senior Director of Support Services for Information Technology at Roger Williams University. Her areas of oversight include helpdesk, desktop support, and classroom/event support. Reporting to the CIO, Karen works collaboratively on departmental and University committees, manages technology installations and other projects, and is heavily involved in strategic planning efforts.
Karen also serves as the Search Advocacy Coordinator at Roger Williams University, training and supporting faculty and staff on issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, especially in regards to equitable hiring practices.
Additionally, Karen is the incoming President of Educational Technology Collaborative (ETC).
Karen has a BA in Sociology from the University of Rhode Island and a Master’s in Teaching from Roger Williams University.

The transformative potential of AI, particularly large language models like ChatGPT, is ushering in a new era of opportunities for integrators and developers, while at the same time causing disruption and concern across many industry sectors. In this presentation, we will consider applications of ChatGPT in an AV systems design, integration and testing context. We will delve into various use cases and examples where AI assistance excels in optimizing workflows, troubleshooting, and API integration, while also highlighting its limitations in areas requiring human touch, complexity, and understanding. We will consider different AV platforms, briefly evaluate their compatibility and integration capacities with large language models like ChatGPT. Furthermore, we will touch upon the value that we, as AV industry professionals, can bring to this changing world, and discuss our roles in the future of AI-assisted AV systems.
